Media Subimperialisms and the Rise of Global South
Higher Seminar in Media and Communication Studies with Farooq Sulehria from Beaconhouse National University, Lahore
Welcome to the next higher seminar organised by the Media and Communication Studies department!
In this higher seminar, we will host a book launch for Farooq Sulehria's latest book, 'Media Subimperialisms and the Rise of Global South.'
Farooq Sulehria’s book, titled, “Media Subimperialisms and the Rise of Global South” was published January this year, under the auspices of Palgrave Macmillan (Singapore). The book introduces the concept of media subimperialism as a new analytical framework for studying global media, drawing on case studies from five continents and featuring contributions from leading media scholars, including Oliver Boyd-Barret, Toby Miller, and Lee Artz. This book defines media subimperialism through three key characteristics: resistance and collaboration with imperial media, regional dominance despite partial domination by imperial systems, and reliance on imperial media for technology and content. Here, “imperial” or “metropolitan” media refers to systems rooted in imperial centers. Together, these traits not only clarify the role of “southern players” in global media but also challenge the notion that they signal the end of media imperialism.
Dr. Farooq Sulehria is Assistant Professor at the Seeta Majeed School of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences, Beaconhouse National University, Lahore. He is also an Affiliated Researcher at Sodertorn University. He has a PhD in Development Studies (SOAS) and MA Global Media and Postnational Communication (SOAS). His research interests include global media, religion, and South Asian politics. His previous publications include, “Media Imperialism in India and Pakistan” (Routledge), “From Terrorism to Television: Dynamics of Media, State and Society” (Routledge). He has also published, “Partition After 75 Years: India, Pakistan and Bangladesh” (Routledge). His forthcoming book, “Pakistan’s Foreign Policy and Strategic Relations in the Twenty-First Century” (PalgraveMacmillan) will be out autumn this year. He also edits an Urdu-language daily, Jeddojehad (Struggle) and worked as a journalist in the past.
The seminar will be followed by a small reception.
