“The Gender of Culture, The Culture of Gender Symposium”

Symposium in cooperation with the departments of Gender studies at Södertörn University and Linköping University and the Institute for Culture and Society, Western Sydney University.

In the 21st Century, gender remains of key importance to media and cultural research. At macro and micro structural levels, gender has a major impact on multiple cultural topics, including the home, the workplace, public space and new and old media networks.

At the level of everyday life, gender overtly and covertly influences cultural ideas and practices around, for example, the mediatization of identities and tastes relating to multiple cultural products and practices.

Even explicitly resistive positions regarding gender conformity, including queer and transgender, are constantly drawn into media debates about how prevailing gender orders are constructed, negotiated, contested and publicly displayed.

This Symposium offers an opportunity to reconsider the culture-gender-media nexus, with presentations concerning the place of gender in contemporary culture and media, and the relationships between gender, the media, the cultural sphere and the wider social domain.

Confirmed presenters:

Stina Bengstsson (Media Studies, Södertörn University)
David Rowe (Institute for Culture and Society, Western Sydney University)
Deborah Stevenson (Institute for Culture and Society, Western Sydney University)
Ann Werner (Gender Studies, Södertörn University).
