CBEES State of the Region Report 2025

Changing Migration Patterns. A Comparative Study on the Movement of People and the Impact for Countries in the Region

Migration patterns are changing and reshaping the societies in the region in profound ways. War and conflict, economic crisis, political repression and other changes can drive both forced and voluntary migration, with long-lasting and significant consequences for people, families and societies in countries of origin as well as destination countries. Movement and mobility inevitably create new encounters, leading to responses that range from hospitality to hostility. The most recent wave of emigration is significantly reconfiguring the migration landscape across Eastern European countries.

The annual CBEES State of the Region report focuses on Central and Eastern Europe, the former Soviet Union, the Balkans, and the Baltic Sea region. This year, we have engaged over 30 scholars who have analysed people’s ongoing movements by mapping out demographic experiences, migration patterns and power relations, at both grassroot and macro levels.

The report presents a contemporary overview of the diverse challenges the region and its countries are facing and provides a preliminary analysis of their implications for the region’s future.

All contributing authors are invited to discuss and share their reflections with the audience at the online launch on 17 June, 13:00-15:00 (CEST, Stockholm time).

The open-access version will be published by 16 June at https://www.sh.se/stateoftheregion. External link.
