Organisation

Södertörn University is a public agency and is governed by legislation and the decisions made by the Swedish Government and Riksdag. The Governing Board is the top decision-making body at the university and the vice-chancellor is the head of the university.

Södertörn University's organisation is based around four academic schools that are responsible for education and research. The Governing Board is the top decision-making body at the university and includes the vice-chancellor among its members. The university has a Faculty Board that has overall responsibility for quality. Management at the university library reports directly to the vice-chancellor. University administration is led by the chief administrative officer and primarily contributes administrative support to the university's organisation.

The Governing Board of Södertörn University has insight into all business that concerns the university and is responsible for it fulfilling its obligations. The board takes decisions about the overall focus of activities, the university's organisation and internal allocation of resources. It also takes decisions about the annual report, interim reports and the budget.

The Executive Management of the university comprises Vice-Chancellor Gustav Amberg, who is the responsible authority for the university's activities and operation. It also includes Pro-Vice-Chancellor Nils Ekedahl, Deputy Vice-Chancellor Ulla Manns and Chief Administrative Officer Hans Andersson.

Boards and committees are appointed by the vice-chancellor and have advisory and investigate functions on issues that relate to the university.

The Faculty Board at Södertörn University is tasked with reviewing and maintaining the quality of courses and programmes, as well as planning and coordinating undergraduate education.

The academic schools are responsible for providing education and research, as well as for all other activities, including staff, students, financing, premises and work environment. Subjects, degree programmes and centres all belong to a specific academic school.

Each school is run by a head of school, who is head and the academic and educational leader.

The university also offers a university-wide programme, Teacher Education, which reports to the vice-chancellor. Teacher Education is led by an academic leader and the programmes staffed by teaching staff from the academic schools. Police Education is commissioned by the Swedish Police Authority, and has been conducted at the School of Police Studies since 1 January 2021.

Library

The university library provides all areas of education and research at the university with information resources. It is also open to the public. The library has a demand-based acquisition system, which means that a considerable part of its collections are made up of resources that teaching staff, researchers and students have proposed purchasing. The library also participates in the publication activities conducted at the university.

University administration comprises the following departments and units that work with issues relating to the university as a whole. The chief administrative officer is head of the university’s administration. Each unit is led by a director.

Research centres

The main purpose of the university's research centres is to provide additional academic value by focusing on a field of research that lies at the intersection of traditional disciplines, so producing a creative meeting place for students and staff.

The library provides information resources for all areas of research and teaching at Södertörn University and the Swedish Red Cross University College. Our primary focus is students and staff, but members of the public are welcome.

Students' union

The students' union, SöderS, works with issues related to higher education, as well as social and leisure activities, and is an important means of making the students' voices heard.
