Learn to analyse English grammar, literature and language’s relation to power The series of courses in English on the intermediate, B-level course builds upon the A-level courses and broadens students’ knowledge by providing a historical perspective on their study of English. The Linguistic Methods course provides students with hands-on experience of linguistic data collection, such as elicitation and observation techniques, and data-based and data-driven methodologies for analysis. In Language and Power, students deepen their knowledge of quantitative and qualitative methods by focusing on discourse analysis to explore linguistic expressions of power in relation to gender roles, political rhetoric, or media production. In Historical Survey Course of British Literature, students are introduced to important works from the Renaissance to the present day, learning to place each work within the history of English-language literature and culture. The B-level also features rotating courses in literature, including Postcolonial Literature and Culture, Historical Survey Course of American Literature, Multiethnic American Literature and Culture, and English Literature and Capitalism. In addition to developing spoken proficiency via oral presentations and participating in classroom discussions, students on the B-level further develop their written skills through instruction on and production of academic texts. Course design Teaching is conducted through lectures and seminars, and assessment takes the form of written examinations, take-home exams, written and oral assignments, as well as attendance at the lectures and seminars.
