Syntactic patterns, rules and exceptions in English
This 6-credit course aims to develop your knowledge of the structure of the English language structure as a system of rules and exceptions, providing a deep understanding of English grammar in both speech and writing. You will explore fundamental concepts and methods in syntactic analyses of the English language and focus on the syntactic patterns which constitute exceptions and varieties in the structure of English, so that you can handle these exceptions in your use of English. In addition, you will learn to adopt a critical approach to possibilities and limitations of syntactic analyses.
Teaching is in the form of lectures and seminars, and assessment is conducted through seminar attendance and written examination.
