Using discourse analysis to examine the interaction of language and power

On this 9-credit course, you will analyse how language use in different contexts can influence, and be influenced by, issues of power, so expanding your knowledge of the role of language in society and of linguistics. You will learn the central concepts and theories of discourse analysis, and be able to describe important conventions of genre, register, context, and fundamental patterns in academic analyses of spoken and written texts. The course also provides instruction and practice in academic linguistic writing in English, such as correct techniques for citations and references and the ability to give and respond to constructive criticism.

Course design

The course is conducted as lectures and seminars, and assessment is through assignments and a written examination.
