This Master’s programme in Political Science provides a broad and in-depth understanding of the study of politics. It is designed to help students develop a critical perspective on the theoretical and practical dimensions of the field, while also equipping them with a versatile set of analytical and methodological skills that are valuable for research, policy analysis, and other professional contexts.

Consultancy or analysis work in the public or private sector A Master’s degree in political science provides excellent an excellent basis for work in the private and public sectors, or in non-governmental organisations that operate between these sectors. This programme offers valuable training for careers that require the investigation, evaluation and analysis of politically relevant questions. Possible professions after graduation include political consultancy, policy analysis or lobbying, or – outside of politics – market research, business consultancy or public relations. The theory and methodology of political process and practices This two-year programme begins with a semester of courses on core topics in political science: Democratic Theory, Policy-Making and Multi-Level Governance, Democracy, Populism and Autocratisation, and Security and Conflict. The second semester focuses on research design and methodological training, covering both qualitative and quantitative approaches. The third semester offers students the opportunity to complete a professional internship, study abroad as exchange students, or to take elective courses at Södertörn University or other Swedish universities, in consultation with the programme convenor. The Master’s dissertation is written during the fourth semester. The topic is chosen in consultation with the supervisor. Semester 1 Democratic theory; Policy-Making and Multi-Level Governance; Democracy, Populism, Autocratisation; Security and Conflict Semester 2 Qualitative Research Methods; Quantitative research methods; Analytical Approaches and Research Design; Independent Study I Semester 3 Students may either take optional courses or complete an advanced professional internship at Södertörn University. Alternatively, students may choose to take courses at other Swedish universities or at universities abroad. Semester 4 Dissertation work Course design This two-year programme has one semester, a total of 30 credits, that is composed of optional courses, and the programme concludes with the writing of a 30-credit dissertation. This provides the opportunity for considerable specialisation in a subject of your choice. Compulsory courses cover various aspects of governance and democratic theory, as well as research design and methodology.
Improve your political analysis and problem-solving skills Are you interested in questions of how democracy works and the theories behind it? Or in analysing political power and organisation? This Master’s degree focuses on these issues and others. It will enhance your ability to conduct political analysis and improve your problem-solving skills, provide training in the methodology used in the social sciences and develop your ability to autonomously apply these skills to your studies. The programmes also makes use of research performed by members of staff and links theory-driven, normative, empirical and conceptual analyses. You will study political power and organisation in both specific and wider senses, both within and between various societal and analytical levels.
