Studies in the Educational Sciences

Studies in the Educational Sciences is a research area that examines changes to and the preservation of culture, knowledges and values in relation to educational institutions.

Doctoral education examines the conditions and opportunities of teaching, using research questions that spring from the teaching profession. What does it cover? How is teaching shaped by different cultural and socio-political contexts? Research is characterised by a critical approach that includes today’s multicultural, multilingual and mediatised society.

The research area of Studies in the Educational Sciences includes seven subjects at doctoral level: Swedish, Education, Media and Communication Studies, Comparative Literature, the Theory of Practical Knowledge, History and History of Ideas.

In November 2017, the Swedish Higher Education Authority decided to award Södertörn University degree-awarding powers – for licentiate and doctoral degrees – in the educational sciences. Research examines teaching and learning, and the issues are those that teachers encounter in their working life. The first doctoral students were admitted in the autumn of 2018. The subjects that are now included in the research area have close links with Teacher Education at Södertörn University, programmes that are a significant part of the university’s teaching activities.
