Baltic Sea region and Eastern European research

Multidisciplinary research into the Baltic Sea region and Eastern Europe plays an important role at Södertörn University and is conducted at all of the university’s academic schools. This unique research profile has existed at the university since it was founded in 1996. Researchers who examine, explain and actively participate in analyses of ongoing change in the region, using perspectives from different subjects, are all gathered under one roof.

The region around the Baltic Sea and the area that we call eastern Europe is fascinating, diverse and complicated. The environment in the Baltic Sea greatly affects everyday life for the people who live along its coastline. Political trends in the countries that were once part of the Soviet Union are a story of new hope, but also of corruption. At Södertörn University, we have made it our task to promote research about this region in all disciplines. Culture, history, governance or nature – all fields are welcome. There are researchers from many different subjects: political science, biology, ethnology, economics, journalism, comparative literature, etc. What they all have in common is that their research relates to the Baltic Sea region and/or Eastern Europe.

CBEES and BEEGS

The Centre for Baltic and East European Studies, CBEES, is a research centre at Södertörn University that is tasked with promoting and developing the research that is conducted in areas linked to the Baltic Sea region and Eastern Europe. It is also home to the Baltic and East European Graduate School, BEEGS, a unique environment in the Swedish academic world. Doctoral students encounter an international milieu characterised by a multidisciplinary focus, with the emphasis on regional studies in the Baltic Sea region and Eastern Europe.

CBEES also publishes an English-language journal, Baltic Worlds, External link, opens in new window. which has four issues each year. Its purpose is to disseminate research results that are linked to the Baltic Sea region and Eastern Europe. Baltic Worlds is a multidisciplinary journal that includes peer reviewed articles and interviews, conference reports, reviews and reporting. Its readership is primarily within academia, but also outside higher education. Baltic Worlds has subscribers in fifty countries.
