From applying to moving in
Please note that we only guarantee housing for individual fee-paying Master’s students and some non-European exchange students who apply before the deadline.
We do not offer housing for couples or families. Dates are available in the accommodation calendar above.
We use email to send you updates about housing, so please make sure we have the correct address and check your spam folder regularly.
- The first step of the application process is different for Master’s students and exchange students:
Master’s students: You will receive a link to a housing form with your acceptance letter from Södertörn University. Please complete this form. We will then email application instructions to you. After you start the application process, we will email further instructions. Please contact us if you do not receive an email from us.
Exchange students: You apply for accommodation after your home university has nominated you for studies at Södertörn University. Once you have finished your study application you will receive an email from our Mobility Online system with instructions about how to apply for housing. Start the housing application process using exactly the same name and email address as your study application. You will receive another email with further instructions once you have sent in your information. Please contact us if you do not receive an email.
The following steps are the same for all international students. - Once you have submitted your application, you will receive no more information until after the application deadline.
- A few weeks after the application deadline, you will receive your accommodation offer.
- A few days after you accept the offer, we will email you an invoice for the partial payment. The payment deadline is stated on your invoice. Make sure we receive your payment on time. You need the information on the invoice to make the payment correctly. The partial payment for your accommodation is equivalent to one month’s rent and is non-refundable. Student accommodation is rented per semester. More information about payment.
- You will receive the second, and final, invoice shortly before your arrival day(s). This is the remaining rent for the whole semester; the amount will depend on the housing you have been allocated and is the total sum for your housing per semester, minus the partial payment. The payment deadline is stated on your invoice.
- Insurance cover for international students at Södertörn University differs depending on which type of student you are.
Södertörn University provides two group insurance policies through Kammarkollegiet, covering exchange students (Student IN) and fee paying students (FAS/FAS+) for the entire study period, including two weeks before and two weeks after the official study dates.
The insurance policies have coverage for liability, limited personal property protection and legal expenses. Some claims may require a deductible.
We strongly recommend all international students to review the Student IN or FAS/FAS+ insurance terms to determine whether additional home or travel insurance is necessary. Extra insurance may be needed if you: - plan to stay in Sweden longer than two weeks after your studies,
- intend to travel outside Sweden during your stay,
- have pre‑existing medical conditions not covered by Kammarkollegiet’s policies.
Fee-paying international students:
Insurance for students who pay tuition fees (FAS and FASplus) - Kammarkollegiet
Exchange students:
Insurance for exchange students in Sweden (Student IN) - Kammarkollegiet
While these group insurances offer certain protections comparable to basic home insurance, they do not replace comprehensive home or travel insurance.
Before the arrival days, we will send general information as well as details about how and where to collect your key. There will be a pre‑departure webinar in mid‑August or mid‑January where you can join and ask questions. We recommend that you collect your keys during the designated arrival days. It is not possible to collect them before the contract start date.
Please note the opening hours for key collection and inform us if you cannot collect your key during the arrival days.
When you move into your room, please check that nothing is broken and review the kitchen inventory to check that nothing is missing. If anything is broken, missing or not cleaned properly on arrival, please document it and report it within 48 hours via the form. If you do not report it, you may be charged for repairs, replacements or cleaning when you move out.
Most apartments show normal signs of use since the buildings and interiors are not new. However, they should always be clean and in good condition. It is also possible that some dust may be visible if there has been a gap between tenants.
- Before the arrival day(s), we will send general information and information about how and where to collect your key. We recommend that you collect your key during the arrival days.
- Please note the opening hours for key collection and inform us if you cannot collect your key during the arrival days.
- When you move into your room, please make sure nothing is broken and go through the kitchen inventory to check that nothing is missing. If anything is broken or missing, you must report this within 48 hours. If you do not do this, you will be charged for repairs or replacements when you move out.
Last day of tenancy
The latest time to return your key is 8:00 (8 AM) the day after your last day of tenancy stated in your tenancy agreement. The location is Södertörn Campus. The full details on where and how, along with cleaning instructions, are sent via email 2-4 weeks before your tenancy ends.
Cleaning
Before you move out, it is very important that you follow the cleaning instructions. The apartment should be in a move in ready/very good condition for the next tenant.
If you do not have the knowledge or possibility to clean the apartment yourself, please hire a cleaning service at your own expense before moving-out date.
If you fail to clean sufficiently or leave anything behind (see cleaning instructions) after your move-out, you will be charged a fee of SEK 1500-3000.
Student accommodation at Södertörn University is rented per semester. The first instalment covers approximately 25% of the total rent for one semester (five months). The second instalment covers the remaining 75%. Rent invoices are sent via email and must be paid before you move in.
Use the details on the invoice when you make your payment. The best way to pay is via an international bank transfer. The second option is via Bankgiro, which is only possible from a Swedish bank account. You cannot pay your rent in person/with a credit/debit card.
Please follow these instructions carefully, so our Finance and Auditing unit can identify your payment and register it on time:
- State the invoice number (invoice no/fakturanummer/fakturanr) as your reference. This is the 9-digit number in the top-centre of the invoice.
- If you can provide a message with your payment, state your name and apartment number.
- Choose Swedish kronor (SEK) as the currency and ensure you pay the full amount including any bank fees for international transfers.
- State your full name if the payment is not from your own bank account or if someone else is making the transfer for you.
