Södertörn University has converted to distance education – no teaching on university premises from Wednesday 18 March

The Swedish Government recommends that after 18 March all higher education institutions move to distance education. Södertörn University has followed this recommendation and there will be no teaching on university premises until further notice. This is likely to apply throughout the spring semester. All written examinations will be replaced by other forms of examination for the entire spring semester. Students are asked to stay updated about their course or programme via SH-StudyWeb. Staff and students can access the university premises with their keycards and both Infocenter and the library are open. Please remember to maintain social distancing when on university premises. We have chosen to close all the group rooms in the library to reduce the risk of infection.

We do not offer accommodation for families. To be eligible for student housing you need the take at least 15 ECTS at Södertörn University each semester.

Changed application process for autumn semester 2020

The deadline for housing applications has been extended due to the coronavirus outbreak. People who apply in the normal application period (1 April – 1 May) will be given priority. If you apply in the extension period, rooms will be allocated on a first come first served basis, but we will try to fulfil your requests wherever possible.

The payment deadline for the holding deposit has been extended until 14 August. Payment for the remaining rent for the semester is due on 3 September. Please do not pay your rent until you receive the invoice!

Please note that we only guarantee housing for individual exchange students and fee-paying Master’s students who apply on time; we do not offer housing for couples or families. Housing is allocated on a first come first served basis. If you are placed on the waiting list, you cannot apply for specific housing. If the kind of housing is important, please apply for housing as soon as applications open. Dates are available in the accommodation calendar above.

We use email to send you updates about housing, so please make sure we have the correct address and check your spam folder regularly.

  1. The first step of the application process is different for exchange students and Master’s students.
    Master’s students: You will receive a link to a housing form with your acceptance letter from Södertörn University. Please complete this form. We will then email application instructions to you. After you start the application process, we will email further instructions. Please contact us if you do not receive an email from us.
    Exchange students: You apply for accommodation after your home university has nominated you for studies at Södertörn University. Once you have finished your study application you will receive an email with instructions from our Mobility Online system on how to apply for housing. Start the housing application process using exactly the same name and email address as your study application. You will receive another email with further instructions once you have sent in your information. Please contact us if you do not receive an email.

    The following steps are the same for all applicants.

  2. Once you have submitted your application, you will receive no more information until after the application deadline.

  3. A few weeks after the application deadline, you will receive either an offer of housing or a notification that you are on the waiting list. If you are not eligible for university housing, you will be notified.

  4. A few days after you accept the offer, we will email you an invoice for the holding deposit. The payment deadline is 10 days from the day you received the invoice. You need the information on the invoice to make the payment correctly. The holding deposit for all housing is one month’s rent and is non-refundable. Student accommodation is rented per semester. The first month’s rent is the holding deposit and the remainder must be paid before you move in. You cannot collect the key to your room until you have done this. More information about payment.

  5. Once we have received your holding deposit, your housing is reserved for one or two semesters (depending on what you applied for). You will be sent your housing contract by email. Please download and sign it, then upload the signed contract in Mobility Online.

  6. You will receive the final invoice about six weeks before the official arrival date. This is for the rent for the whole semester; the amount will depend on the housing you have been allocated and is the total sum for your housing per semester, minus the holding deposit. You will have 30 days to make the payment. We must receive this payment well before your arrival day because you cannot collect your key unless you have paid this invoice. Rent is non-refundable.

  7. Before the official arrival day, we will send general information and information about how and where to collect your key. We recommend that you collect your key during the arrival days.

  8. Please note the opening hours for key collection and inform us if you cannot collect your key during the arrival days. You will receive a folder from the property owner when you collect your key. Please read this information carefully.

  9. When you move into your room, please make sure nothing is broken and go through the kitchen inventory to check that nothing is missing. If anything is broken or missing, you must report this within 48 hours. If you do not do this, you will be charged for repairs or replacements when you move out.

You have five days to either accept or decline a housing offer. Please use Mobility Online to inform us of your decision. If you decline the offer, please do without delay so that we can offer your housing to someone on the waiting list. Changing housing is not possible. There is no chance of receiving a second offer once you have declined the first one, so you must find your own housing.

If you have not received your invoice by date, please contact us immediately and we will send the invoice manually. You will have 10 days to make your payment. Please follow all the instructions on the invoice.

The second invoice must be paid by the end of August/December. You cannot collect the key to your room until the total cost has been paid. Rooms are only rented per semester, so even if you are here for less time you must pay for the whole semester.

(Autumn semester only) Please note that the last day of the semester is date January. We recommend staying at a hostel if you have an exam on the last day of your rental contract. If you are renting for a full academic year, the last day of your contract is date.

You will be notified of your place on the waiting list, but we cannot give you any indication how likely it is that you will receive a housing offer; we do not know how many students will decline their housing offers. A declined housing offer will be offered to the first person on the waiting list, so once you are on the waiting list you cannot apply for a specific kind of housing. There is no final date for when someone on the waiting list may receive an offer, because whenever someone declines a housing offer it will be forwarded to the waiting list.

Housing rules

  • Home insurance is compulsory
  • Students share responsibility for any damage in the common areas.
  • Students share responsibility for keeping the common areas clean.
  • Students are responsible for their visitors and will be liable for any damage or disturbance caused by them.
  • Single rooms cannot be shared by two people.
  • Shared rooms can only be shared by two tenants.
  • Smoking is strictly prohibited inside the buildings.
  • Pets are strictly prohibited inside the buildings.

Moving in

If you have applied for and received a confirmation of student housing from Södertörn University, collect your keys on the arrival days. Moving in is only possible on the arrival days and you will not have access to your room until you have signed the rental contract. Signing the contract must be done in person. If you arrive in the evening, you will have to arrange your own accommodation for the first night.

You will not be able to collect your key if the rent has not been paid in advance. More detailed information about collecting your key will be sent to you before your arrival.

Please note that only the student named on the rental contract may collect the key.

Moving out

Book your room inspection at least two weeks before you move out. Information about how to book your inspection will be available about one month before the end of your contract. If you wish to move out more than two weeks before the end of your contract, please contact the Housing Office at accommodation@sh.se to schedule an inspection.

Please notify the inspector in advance of any damaged items or fixtures, and follow these cleaning instructions . If your room is not properly emptied or cleaned, you will be charged for the cleaning service.


After the inspection, hand over the keys to the cleaning inspector. You will not be able to re-enter the room after it has been inspected. If any keys are missing, you will be charged for changing the locks.

Period of notice

Your contract is for one or two semesters, depending on the duration of your stay. No refund is possible. If you are extending your first semester of study at Södertörn University to a full academic year and would like to extend your contract for your student room, please contact the Housing Office.

Student accommodation is rented per semester. You pay the first month’s rent as a holding deposit and then the remainder must be paid before you move in. You will not be able to collect your until the rent for the whole semester has been paid. An invoice for first month’s rent will be sent when you have been allocated a room. Please use the information on the invoice when you pay, so always include the invoice number (invoice no/fakturanummer/fakturanr) as your reference (it is the number at the top of the invoice).

  • Make sure you pay the full amount in Swedish kronor (SEK), including any bank fees for international transfers.
  • Södertörn University will charge you SEK 60 for each reminder we have to send, for example if payment is late, the amount is incorrect, or the payment cannot be identified.
  • Only pay in Swedish kronor (SEK)
  • Please state your name if the payment does not come from your bank account.
