Witness Seminar: “North and South: Social democracy in the European 1970s”

In the last decade scholars have shed light on the transnational activities of European social democrats in the 1970s and early 1980s, especially in promoting democracy in Southern Europe, but also in coordinating their economic and international policies. The purpose of the seminar, then, is to extend our knowledge on the international and transnational history of European Social Democracy by bringing together relevant actors of the period to remember and discuss the key events of these years.

Pierre Schori - international secretary of the Swedish Social Democratic Party (1968-1971 and 1976-1982).
Valdo Spini - vice-secretary of the Italian Socialist Party (1981-1984).
Ulf Sundqvist - chairman of the Social Democratic Party of Finland (1991-1993), minister of education (1972-1975) and minister of trade and industry (1979-1981).

The participants will recount and exchange their experiences on four thematic fields. 1) The social democrat debates and responses to the economic crises of the 1970s, 2) the ideas and practice of a social democrat foreign policy in the context of Cold War and North-South divide, 3) the functioning of formal and informal networks of social democrat transnational cooperation and 4) the changing relations between Northern and Southern European social democrats in the 1970s and the early 1980s.This is an open event and we welcome your attendance and participation.
