Higher seminar in Media Technology: Problematizing “users” – interdisciplinary research using qualitative methods

Higher seminar in Media Technology by Paulina Rajkowska, PhD candidate at Uppsala University, on the topic of ethnographic explorations of users in the context of playful interactions with hybrid technology in museum settings.

Bio

Paulina Rajkowska is a PhD candidate in Human-Computer Interaction at Uppsala University. She comes from a mixed background of sociology, media studies and now HCI. Her work is reflecting upon phenomenon of games, playful interaction and cultural heritage using critical perspectives and considering human agency in development processes.

Topic

In my research I’ve been doing a meta-study of a Horizon2020 funded project called “GIFT”. Situated in context of museums and cultural heritage institutions, the GIFT Consortium have been working on developing playful interactions with hybrid technology. Using a combination of ethnographic methods I have been able to study the process and focus on how the concept of “Users”, central to HCI research, is problematized and applied in development. During my talk I will discuss the setup of my study within the project, the multidisciplinary mixed methods and theory approach with its advantages and challenges, as well as some early findings on the concepts in question.
