Summary:

This dissertation explores the relation between media environments and visual arts education in Sweden and Estonia, both with regards to how media shapes the ways in which the subject is understood and practiced and how educators enable media through configurations and partly invisible work. Media are defined in the study as enabling environments, and includes technologies and techniques for image making as well as spatial configurations and digital system that, together with established practices within the subject, make up the infrastructures of visual arts education. Through comparing two national traditions, different strategies among teachers to develop visual arts education and maintain its specificity in the digitalized school becomes visible. The dissertation also discuss how these strategies can be used to develop media literacy education within the subject, to include also infrastructural and historicizing perspectives.
