The Institute of Contemporary History invites you to take part in the conversation about the Women’s International Democratic Federation, the Cold War and the Global South.

The Women’s International Democratic Federation was created in 1945 in Paris and played an important role in the transnational work for women’s rights during the Cold War. The conversation problematizes the place that the WIDF had in the history of the anti-colonial movement and the politics of the Soviet Union. Did this organization act for women’s causes or was it merely a Cold War political instrument? Yulia Gradskova discusses the WIDF’s forgotten and contradictory history in conversation with Holger Weiss.

Participants:

Yulia Gradskova is Associate Professor in History and the author of the book, The Women’s International Democratic Federation, the Global South and the Cold War. Defending the Rights of Women of the Whole World (Routledge 2021).

Holger Weiss is professor in general history at Åbo Akademi University, Finland.

The event is organised by the Institute of Contemporary History at Södertörn University within the series “Contemporary Talks”.
