Contention in the Welfare State. Political Protest and Activism in the 1980s Sweden
A workshop with focus on research about contentious politics, social movements, riots and protests in Sweden during the 1980s
The 1980s are often described as a "right-wing decade" and as the decade when the new social movements of the 1970s lost their influence in society. Right-wing politics and neoliberalism became more and more dominant discourses in several western countries. But, the decade contained much more than right-wing politics and during the decade protests and resistance against capitalism, conservatism and neoliberalism also took place. For example, the green movement and the squatter movement and many different feminist and anarchist groups had their formative years during the decade.
