Final Seminar with Philipp Seuferling, doctoral student at the Department of Media and Communication Studies at Södertörn University
Welcome to the final seminar for Philipp Seuferling, doctoral student in Media and Communication Studies at Södertörn University:
Refugee camp media: practices, technologies, and histories of a heterotopia
Supervisor: Heike Graf, Södertörn University
Opponent: Saskia Witteborn, Hong Kong University
This dissertation explores media practices in refugee camps. In the wake of forced migration becoming ever more digitized both in its experiences and its governance, this thesis historicizes media practices in and of the refugee camp as a space of the refugee regime. In different historical contexts of Germany since 1945, this study analyzes archival material in order to trace the roles of media practices and technologies in the making, unmaking and
remaking of refugee camps and shelters, and thereby provides historical insights into circularities, ruptures and continuities of media practices and their entanglement with being and being made a refugee.
