Against the Crisis: Ecology and Economy in a Burning World

Research seminar in sociology

On Wednesday, 10:00-11:30 Ståle Holgersen, from Örebro University will present his most recent book at our research seminar. The seminar will take place in room ME014
and the title of the book is Against the Crisis: Ecology and Economy in a Burning World.

ABSTRACT
Energy crisis and inflation, economic crisis and climate crisis. A pandemic that seems to have subsided for now, and a Russian war of aggression that creates further turbulence. We are living in a time of crisis, and Holgersen believes we have been for a long time. In this lecture he discusses how capitalism survives by producing ever new crises. Capitalism is not reproduced despite the crises. It survives because of the crises. In his new book Against the Crisis: Ecology and Economy in a Burning World, Holgersen shows how this happens by analyzing the crises themselves, their class character and how they are part of a broader political context (via states, nationalism, racism and even war). There are both similarities and differences between economic and ecological crises. Both are caused by the DNA of capitalism and contribute - in different ways - to the reproduction of capitalism. But a key difference is that the ruling class has to solve economic crises. This is not the case with the climate crisis.
