Generative learning during a time of de-digitalisation: Swedish pupils’ formal and informal learning
Plan Seminar of Erik Johansson, PhD Candidate in Media and Communication Studies
Welcome to the next higher seminar in Media and Communication Studies!
In this plan seminar, Erik Johansson will present his PhD research project on the topic: ‘Generative learning during a time of de-digitalisation: Swedish pupils’ formal and informal learning.’
In the context of recent de-digitalisation policy shifts within Swedish compulsory education, the study aims to capture a holistic view of generative AI’s role in both formal and informal learning contexts. The study uses an ethnographically-inspired approach, consisting of interviews and observations, in order to understand pupils’ learning practices with generative AI in both classroom and everyday life settings. Learning practices within these contexts are viewed in conjunction with each other in order to understand how AI literacy forms through their intersections. As such, the study seeks to add a nuanced perspective to current conceptualisations of AI literacy that can be helpful in the development of future frameworks. An additional aim is to leverage experts’ insights into design processes and implementation of educational AI tools in formal education. This is done so as to better understand how generative AI is deployed locally, with the aim of providing qualitative accounts that may provide valuable perspectives in the continued development of policies around AI and digitalisation in Swedish education.
