Welcome to the launch of the book Digital Media and the Dynamics of Civil Society: Retooling Citizenship in New EU Democracies by Maria Bakardjieva, Stina Bengtsson, Göran Bolin and Kjell Engelbrekt (Rowman & Littlefield, 2021).

Based on an extended empirical research project in Estonia and Bulgaria, funded by the Foundation for Baltic and East European Studies, this book focuses on the question: Have digital media contributed to the constitution of a new public space, fostering the vitality and democratic potency of civil society in countries where it has suffered historical obstacles?

Each chapter approaches this question from a different angle by traversing a range of personal, group, and societal beliefs, lived experiences and collective actions unfolding in the region at a time when citizens around the world are grappling to understand and harness the power of digital communication.

The event will be held in the PC corridor in Primus, outside room PC249.
