9:30 - 10:30 AM Keynote presentation with Professor Pablo Boczkowski and Mora Matassi, Northwestern University: TO KNOW IS TO COMPARE: STUDYING SOCIAL MEDIA ACROSS NATIONS, MEDIA AND PLATFORMS.

This keynote will establish the framework for cross-national comparative studies of journalism, with the suggestion of the relevance of these studies to civic engagement and media education, setting the agenda for a global approach to young people and news around the world - Lynn Schofield Clark to introduce.

Pablo Boczkowski is co-author of the forthcoming TO KNOW IS TO COMPARE: STUDYING SOCIAL MEDIA ACROSS COUNTRIES, MEDIA AND PLATFORMS (MIT Press, spring 2023), which is the basis of this talk.

Mora Matassi is co-author of the forthcoming TO KNOW IS TO COMPARE: STUDYING SOCIAL MEDIA ACROSS COUNTRIES, MEDIA AND PLATFORMS (MIT Press, spring 2023) which is the basis of this talk.

10:30 - 10:45 Coffee break

10:45 - 12:30 PM Roundtable: Small group discussions with informal presentations of research

Organizers will place participants into table groups so that each person can share their research in a dialogical format (aka, no power points). Participants who have leadership in this field of study will be asked to act as table leaders who facilitate discussion and will then report back to the full group on common themes. We have chosen this approach in order to encourage dialogue and also to make the preconference flexible so as to accommodate a larger or a smaller group of participants.

12:30-1:30 PM Lunch: Participants will be encouraged to stay with their table group for lunch in order to continue the discussions informally and to get to know one another personally.

1:30 - 2:45 PM keynote panel featuring scholars focused on contexts in Africa, Asia, and Eastern Europe - Sofia Johansson to introduce and moderate.

Panelists include:

Professor Winston Mano, University of Westminster, founder and editor in chief, Journal of African Media Studies

Professor and Chair Maria Bakardjieva, Calgary University, author, Internet Society: The Internet in Everyday Life, London: Sage.

Lecturer, Shobha (Vadrevu) Avadhani, National University of Singapore, author, multiple articles on youth, politics and social media in Asia.

3:00 - 3.20 Professor Rebecca Dry, head of International Global Communication, ISCOM and supervisor, will talk about partnership with Fashion Institute of Technology NY as part of the ISCOM Joint Global Marketing Communication program

Scholars with expertise in this subject area, some of whom may be among those listed above, will be invited to offer their reflections on what they learned over the course of the day, and will offer their insights regarding the most pressing issues and the topics that they believe warrant further research. In closing all participants will be given a brief opportunity to share their takeaways from the day. - Stina Bengtsson to introduce and moderate

Throughout the day, participants will be invited to share contact information, make plans for hearing one another’s presentations during ICA, and share resources and ideas.
