Workshop: Exhibition Studies

Joint workshop hosted by the Department of Media and Communication Studies and the Department of Art History with guest researcher Maija Koskinen, Turku University.

Tuesday April 5, 13-16, Media and Communication Studies (MKV) and Art history
hosts a joint seminar/workshop on exhibition studies with guest researcher Maija
Koskinen, Turku University.

This interdisciplinary workshop is focused on questions of method and welcome
doctoral students and researchers that are interested in how to study the exhibition
medium. Topics might include specific exhibitions or more general discussion about
what an exhibition is and how it can be studied as a medium, as well as the relation
between exhibitions and politics/national identities. What is the difference between art
exhibitions and other kinds of exhibitions, such as world fairs? Do different kinds of
exhibitions require different methodological approaches, and what are these then?
Maija Koskinen, postdoctoral researcher in "MISSION FINLAND - Cold War
cultural diplomacy at the crossroads of East and West" with research interest on the
relationships between art, power and politics, will be the workshop discussant and
circulate a paper on cold war art exhibitions in Finland to participants in beforehand.
The event organized by Camilla Larsson (Art history) and Ingrid Forsler (MKV).

Workshop Format
The workshop has the format of a group discussion. The list of participants, together
with the research papers, will be distributed one week before the seminar. All
participants will be asked to read all the papers and prepare comments for a group
discussion.

Position Papers
• Participants are invited to prepare brief position papers in English of 0.5-1
page at maximum.
• Papers may present current research, case studies, questions and/or problems
of methodological concerns, other.
• Participants that do not present a short paper are welcome to register but are
expected to attune to the themes of position papers.
Discussions will be structured thematically by the roundtable chairs, following themes
and topics addressed in papers.
