The disconnection turn and its consequences for work

Higher seminar with Trine Syvertsen & Karin Fast, Digitox / University of Oslo.

The question of how to manage online and offline involvement produces tensions in peoples’ private lives and is debated in the public sphere. In this presentation, Trine Syvertsen will introduce the project she chairs: Intrusive media, ambivalent users and digital detox (Digitox), which studies intrusive media from the perspectives of history, politics, business and users.

Thereafter, Karin Fast will present a particular sub-study from the project, which inquires digital disconnection as something integral to post-digital capitalism and contemporary working lives. Bridging digital disconnection studies, on the one hand, and (digital) work theory, on the other hand, Karin Fast suggests a new framework for thinking critically about the emergent media and work ethics implied by the disconnection turn.
