Aesthetics as Technique and Spatial Occupation in Hybrid Political Regimes

CBEES Advanced Seminar with Tihomir Topuzovski, Interdisciplinary Programme Director of the Museum of Contemporary Art, Skopje, and Editor-in-chief of the Journal “The Large Glass”

Speaker: Tihomir Topuzovski, Interdisciplinary Programme Director of the Museum of Contemporary Art, Skopje, and Editor-in-chief of the Journal “The Large Glass”

Discussant: Irina Seits, Postdoctoral Researcher in Aesthetics, CBEES, Södertörn University

Chair: Mark Bassin, Professor of History of Ideas, CBEES, Södertörn University

Abstract:
The lecture presents a reflection on aesthetics within the wider understanding of the role of political rhythms in hybrid regimes, states that are neither liberal democracies nor closed authoritarian systems, and further presents an idea of how a political establishment disposes a new set of spatial practices through the field of aesthetics. It provides some empirical background by examining various projects in Skopje, North Macedonia and Belgrade, Serbia which can shed light on the use of aesthetics as a technique for spatial occupation. This lecture can contribute to the ongoing debates about the relationship between politics, spatiality, and aesthetics.
