Civil Society and the Diffusion and Translation of Foreign Funding Restrictions
In recent years, authoritarian tendencies have proliferated across the world. This trend has taken root in liberal democracies, as well as countries that were once on the path of democratization. Among manifestations of authoritarianism, repression of civil society has been prominent.
The conference will explore explore, theoretically and empirically, implications of foreign funding restrictions for governments, civil societies, and philanthropic funders. Contributions by scholars from different countries will capture both the horizontal spread of foreign funding restrictions across countries and the vertical integration/navigation of these restrictions within countries by various actors in novel ways, and examine how and why the mechanisms generating those processes might vary.
The conference is financially support by the Center for Baltic and East European Studies (CBEES) and the Foundation for Baltic and East European Studies.
Participation in the conference is by invitation only.
