Vad ser vi framför oss när vi tänker på turkisk konst? Är det kanske avancerad kalligrafi, de välkända İznik keramiken, eller de otaliga gestaltningar av tulpaner som prydde det osmanska hovet? Detta är några av de typiska konstformer som ofta associerats med Turkiet och det Osmanska riket. Men det finns många andra typer av konst och kulturuttryck i dagens Turkiet som sällan får stå i strålkastaljuset. Denna utställning tar avstamp i ett av dessa– turkisk black och dödsmetal. Baserad på Douglas Mattssons avhandling To Praise Disgrace: Islamic Semiotic Resources in Turkish Black Metal (2025), utforskar denna utställning det rika och varierande kulturuttrycken som den turkiska metal-scenen producerar, så som t-shirts, konsertaffischer, albumomslag, och musikvideos. I motsats vad som ofta antas, så visar utställningen att blasfemiska konstformer inte bara är möjligt i muslimska majoritetsländer, men att det finns en lång historia av denna typ av kulturuttryck.

What comes to mind when you are asked to think about Turkish art? Is it perhaps intricate calligraphy, well-known İznik ceramics, or the various motifs of Tulips commonly depicted in the Ottoman court? These artistic expressions, rooted in the Muslim Ottoman Empire, are commonly the focus when exploring Turkish art. However, in the vibrant Turkish society, there are many other forms of art and artistic expressions that rarely take the front stage. This exhibition departs from one such cultural expression – Turkish black and death metal culture. Based on Douglas Mattsson’s recent dissertation, To Praise Disgrace: Islamic Semiotic Resources in Turkish Black Metal (2025), this exhibition showcases the vivid and varied cultural expressions, such as t-shirts, album artworks, concert posters, and music videos from the Turkish underground metal scene. Contrary to popular opinion, the exhibition illustrates that blasphemous artistic expressions are not only possible in Muslim majority societies, but that they have been a part of them for a long time.
