Alireza Behtoui har forskat om hur olika aspekter avsociala nätverk skapade av individens sociala relationerär relaterade till och påverkar individens arbetsmarknad – och utbildningsutfall. Socialt kapital, som är det centrala begrepp i dessa projekt, består av de samlade resurser (ekonomiskt, kulturellt och symboliskt kapital) som en individ har möjlighet att mobilisera i sitt sociala nätverk (familjemedlemmar, vänner och bekanta).

Hur individer med skilda bakgrunder (klass, kön och etnicitet) rekryteras till olika arbeten (en organisation och ett urval av nyutexaminerade unga) och befordras inom olika arbetsorganisationer (ett industriföretag och äldreomsorg som ett serviceföretag) har varit ämnen för olika studier som Behtoui har varit involverad i. Enkätundersökning, deltagande observation och intervjuer är metoder som har använts i dessa studier.

Hur det sociala kapitalet påverkar ungdomars utbildningsresultat och utbildningsambitioner är ett annat fält som Behtoui forskar om. De flesta av hans pågående forskningsprojekt handlar utbildning, skola och civilsamhällets organisationer.
