Her research focuses on four closely connected outcomes in later life: divorce, retirement, economic adequacy, and subjective wellbeing. She examines how life-course histories, such as partnership and fertility histories, intergenerational relations, and economic wellbeing, shape these outcomes. Much of her work takes a comparative European perspective, with particular attention to Sweden, Germany, France, and Central and Eastern Europe. She specialises in register- and survey-based analyses (e.g., GGS and SHARE) and has also published research using qualitative data. Additionally, she has studied younger age groups, including gender ideology, marital intentions, and links between economic conditions and relationship quality, and she currently examines how vulnerability, partnerships, and wellbeing are interconnected.
