Nina Carlsson holds a PhD in Political Science from Södertörn University and a Master's degree in Political Science from Uppsala University. She is postdoctoral researcher within the project Social exclusion, polarization and security in the Nordic welfare state (SEPOS, NordForsk, 2021-2023). Her current research investigates the position of the Scandinavian far right towards long-present ‘others’. It analyzes how 1) national minorities and Indigenous peoples constitute a challenge to far right claims to ‘autochthony’, and 2) how deportability is extended to long settled migrants deemed as ‘unintegrated’.

Her main research interests are the governance of ‘old’ and ‘new’ minorities, linguistic justice, civic integration, bordering and border politics, and the far right. Her work has been published in journals such as Ethnic and Racial Studies, Nations and Nationalism, Nationalities Papers and Journal on Ethnopolitics and Minority Issues in Europe. She has (together with Tuire Liimatainen) published on the ethnopolitical mobilization of Sweden-Finns, and has contributed with interviews on minority politics to the Finnish-language minority public service media in Sweden (in Finnish and Swedish).

From December 2021 to May 2022, she was visiting fellow at the Centre for the Study of Democracy and Diversity (CSDD) at the Department of Political Studies, Queen's University, Ontario, Canada, funded by the Sweden-America Foundation. In May 2019, she held a scholarship for a visit at the Swedish Research Institute in Istanbul. Prior to joining Södertörn, she held pre-doctoral positions at the Universities of Vienna and Graz in Austria, and studied Political Science, Turkish and Serbian/Croatian/Bosnian at Istanbul Bilgi University, Uppsala University and the University of Vienna.
