Archaeology

Archaeologists study humans and their culture from the very beginning to the present day. Using different types of material traces, archaeologists interpret what life was like in various eras and various cultural contexts. The subject combines theory and practice to a great degree.

Research and areas of interest among the teaching staff and doctoral students are spread across different time periods, from the oldest Stone Age to our time, and focuses on various parts of the archaeological field. Despite their interests reflecting different specialisations in archaeology, they are gathered around issues relating to the Baltic Sea region and Eastern Europe – the geographic area that is the focus for Södertörn University, and around the role that archaeology plays in society.

One specialisation that is unique in Sweden is the research in marine archaeology conducted through the MARIS research institute.
