About Södertörn University

Students outside the main entrance of Södertörn University.Södertörn University provides high quality research and education at all levels, offering a friendly atmosphere and an inspiring environment. Our modern, attractive campus is located in Flemingsberg, 19 minutes from central Stockholm on the commuter train.

Södertörn University combines interesting subjects to make engaging and often unique degrees. We offer 250 courses and 70 programmes, and currently have 11 000 enrolled students. We conduct education and research in the humanities, social sciences, technology and natural science. We also offer teacher education with an intercultural profile. Research into the Baltic region and Eastern Europe forms a knowledge environment that is among the best in the world.

The main purpose of the research centres is to provide the university with additional academic value by focusing on a field of academic interest that lies at the intersection of traditional disciplines, producing a creative meeting place for students and staff.

This focus may be one of the university's established profile areas, but there should also be the opportunity to develop new fields of knowledge. The gathering of forces that, per definition, occurs when a centre is formed is also expected to increase the potential for external research funding and the development of forms for cooperation with the surrounding community.

The basic principles are that the centres primarily work with research and methodology development in interdisciplinary fields, that education is conducted at Master's level (second cycle) or above, or as contract education, and that cooperation with the surrounding community is given a prominent role in the centre's activities. A research centre should be one of the university's most important channels to public authorities, organisations, the labour market and societal interest in general. It should thus also contribute to making the university's activities more widely known, both regionally and nationally.

The centres are located at an academic school, which is responsible for funding, staff and issues relating to the work environment, as well as other support functions. A basic principle is that centres should not employ their own staff other than in cases where the Vice-Chancellor has declared an exceptional case. CBEES is currently the only centre that employs staff and is not located at an academic school.
