English C

Course 30 credits

In the C course you study linguistic as well as literary theories and methods. The individual modules prepare you for conducting a research project with either a linguistic or literary focus. With the help of a supervisor you also write an advanced essay in English. The course aims to give you insights into the latest research topics of each discipline and enhances your English-language academic skills.

Course design

Teaching is in the form of lectures, seminars and individual supervision. All teaching is conducted in English for students to improve their oral and written proficiency. The course literature is in English.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of this course, the student is able to:

Knowledge and understanding

  • describe, compare and identify the advantages and disadvantages of different theories and methods for analysing language, literature and culture
  • identify and formulate questions about English-language literature and linguistics that correspond to advanced knowledge.
Competence and ability
  • write with a high degree of linguistic precision
  • discuss linguistic and literary issues at a scholarly level
  • under the guidance of a supervisor, formulate and demarcate a research project suitable for English-language linguistic or literary study
  • search, interpret, use and accurately refer to various sources in an extended, structured essay within the subject of English
  • independently complete a scholarly investigation with clear application of linguistic or literary methodology and theory on English-language research material
  • problematise choices and application of methods and theories and defend his or her own choices.
Judgement and approach
  • reflect on the possibilities and limitations of scientific analyses
  • evaluate and satisfy his or her own needs for further information in the subject of English.


Theoretical Approaches to Linguistics
1001: seminar and lecture attendance, written assignments and oral presentations

Theoretical Approaches to Literature
1002: seminar and lecture attendance, written assignments and oral presentations

1003: Essay, defence of essay and review of another student's essay

If a student has missed more than 20% of the seminars and lectures on a course module the student can only compensate this by, on another occasion, attending the seminars and/or lectures required to reach a minimum level of 80% overall attendance.

Due to resources, the number of times a student may participate in the final examination of the essay is limited to five (5), including the course's scheduled final examination. The limitation applies only to the essay and the public discussion of the essay

Grading criteria will be distributed at course/module start.
