Natalia Roudakova: Ethics and Accountability in Soviet Journalism

Higher seminar with Natalia Roudakova, from Erasmus University Rotterdam, Department of Media and Communication and University of California, San Diego, Communication, arranged by Media and Communication Studies at the School of Culture and Education, Södertörn University

In the face of the global crisis of trust in journalism, this talk examines the practices of accountability and trust-building that existed between journalists and their audiences in the Soviet Union. What kind of monitorial role, if any, did journalists play in Soviet Russia, compared to the political watchdog role prescribed for journalists in liberal democracies? What relations of duty and obligation existed in the triangle between journalists, audiences, and public officials in the USSR? Through what daily practices did Soviet journalists develop ethical ties that bound them to their readers, and readers to them? How did Soviet journalists signal to their readers that they were on their readers’ side, particularly in periods of conflict with representatives of Soviet bureaucracies?

By viewing journalists as simultaneously political and moral actors who occupied ambivalent spaces within the Soviet governmental project, this talk aims to widen our understanding of media accountability, while also suggesting specific avenues of trust-building that continue to be relevant for developing quality relations between journalists and their audiences today.
