New and old institutions within Russian media system

This presentation will be devoted to the dual character of the Russian media system. By duality we mean the coexistence within Russian media system some elements proper to the commercially and competition driven media system with some elements traditional for state monopolist media system. During longtime such coexistence has been interpreted as the dynamic process of the transition from “old soviet media” toward “democratic market media”. Actually we can see that such transitional representation of the Russian media was a collective mythology. It means that the combination of such elements should be interpreted in static context rather than dynamic one.

To reexamine such strange mix between two elements the presentation will provide the institutional approach which considers that each social practice is based on formal rules which should combine with non-formal rules such as traditions, ways of doing etc. Together they form the institutions which are rooted in social norms. In our opinion the strange mix between high commercialization and state patrimonialism in media, news culture with propaganda culture, private money with state money, market practices with non-market practices, author protection with accessibility and public domain resides in institutional conflict between rooted (and installed during previous centuries) practices with newly implemented in post-soviet period.

Presentation will provide the deep understanding of the combination of such practices and some methodological elements to analyze it.
