Which forms of governance have become European institutions?

On this Master’s course, you will study rival theoretical perspectives on European integration and reflect upon historical and contemporary development. You will not only gain in-depth knowledge about the institutions of the European Union, but will also move beyond this to examine the role of other organisations and actors in European governance. There is detailed analysis of specific areas to illustrate the varied forms of governance that have become European institutions. The course conceptualises space, examining the whole of the area that is labelled Europe, and considering the scholarly debate on the democratic accountability of the European Union. It also examines the consequences of integration for national democracy, within and beyond the borders of the European Union.

The course is examined through active participation in the seminars, written assignments and an essay.
