Work for people and support their interaction The study of Psychology, and the knowledge this provides, is useful in most contexts in which people act and interact. You will gain cutting edge skills in both psychology and research, along with scholarly and critical thinking. In addition, your studies will entail personal development, as you will learn to understand your own thoughts and actions. Students often choose Psychology as part of a Bachelor’s degree, along with another subject. Thanks to the broad focus of Psychology, this combination could include anything from economics to ecology. Psychology can also be part of vocational education with the aim of becoming a teacher or human resources specialist, making the subject the basis of a future profession. A large number of students at Södertörn University study Psychology as part of the Personnel Management programme, and many of them now work in recruitment or HR. However, studying Psychology can lead to work in anything from public enquiries, healthcare to marketing. Read about research in this subject
The theory and practice of strategic interaction Strategic thinking is often singled out as a key leadership competence. More generally, it is a critical ingredient in all social interaction, both in everyday life and in professional activities. The course presents theories and principles from psychology and other social sciences, such as economics, business administration, and political science, although no previous knowledge of these areas is required. You will gain personal experience of the dilemmas that drive many of the societal challenges of sustainability, and examine how individuals spontaneously tend to conceptualise and approach strategic interaction. Research methodology is integrated in the course, so you will learn how to adopt a critical stance to interpreting and evaluating empirical data on strategic interaction. To provide you with the tools necessary to improve your strategic thinking, the course combines readings and individual reflection on strategic situations with case discussions and practical exercises. There is also a written examination, that focuses on both theoretical knowledge and the practical application of the theories.
Explore and analyse people’s behaviour, interaction and experiences Psychology is a subject that is interested in human behaviour and interaction. As a science, psychology wants to systematically investigate how people experience and act in various situations. How and why do people think, feel and behave as they do? If you want to investigate the workings of the human psyche, work in an area in which knowledge about people is necessary or are interested in the scientific methodology of Psychology, then this is the subject for you. For many people, studying Psychology also leads to significant personal development. With Psychology as your main field of study, you gain an understanding of human thinking from many different perspectives – biological, neurological, cognitive, social and cultural. Issues that are discussed include how people develop throughout their lives, group behaviour and the factors that influence people’s thoughts, emotions and behaviours. As a subject, Psychology has a strong scientific basis and you will learn a range of theories and methods. Knowledge of the subject, scientific methodology and statistics are integrated and you are trained in working independently to search for, understand, summarise, analyse and evaluate information.
