Analysis and problem-solving in the public or private sectors

Economists work in both the public and private sectors. In the private sector this could include banks, insurance companies, consultancies and businesses. In the public sector, economists are needed at central banks, ministries of finance and think tanks as well as in local government. Non-governmental organisations and charities also employ economists.

After graduating you will be able to provide specialist economic advice in many different settings. Thanks to your understanding of economic relationships, you will be able to contribute to economic decision-making, analysing data and statistics, forecasting or policy- making, among many other things. This could be done in fields as varied as poverty reduction, environmental advocacy, accounting and investor relations.
