  • Explain basic concepts, theories and research results in social psychology and how social psychology as a research field has evolved over time
  • Describe basic research methodology in psychology and theory of science

  • Design, plan and conduct simple psychological studies
  • Summarise and report results of empirical material

Course content, modules and examinations

The course covers theory and method in social psychology. It deals with how thoughts, feelings and actions are affected by social interaction and exchange between people and groups. The course sheds light on how people experience, construct, and transfer social information, social identity, stereotypes, attitudes, and prejudices. Emphasis is also placed on related research methodology that involves critically examining, collecting, interpreting, and compiling literature and empirical material about social psychological phenomenon, i.e., how people think, feel and act in different social conditions.

Course design

Teaching is conducted through lectures, seminars, and group supervision that present the scientific-theoretical and methodological aspects of various elements of research. These are applied through the planning, collection, statistical processing, and reporting of empirical material.

Examination format

  • Written exam
  • Planning, implementation, and written reporting of empirical data
  • Seminar participation and written hand-in assignments

Absence from seminars may be compensated for through written assignments, as instructed by the course coordinator. The student may be absent from no more than one compulsory session.

The grading criteria are distributed prior to the start of a course or module.

If a student has a certificate from Södertörn University for compensatory support, the examiner has the right to decide on an adapted examination or alternative form of examination in accordance with Södertörn University's regulations.

Restrictions on accreditation

The course may not be accredited as part of a degree if the contents are partly or wholly the same as a course previously taken in Sweden or elsewhere.
