This course syllabus was validated by the Faculty Board for Humanities, Social Sciences and Technology at Södertörn University on 2018-04-23 according to the stipulations in the Higher Education Ordinance.

Entry requirements

The equivalent of English B and 60 credits in Social Sciences or Humanities.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course, the student can

  • describe hospitality as a theoretical approach to staff management and attitudes towards customers, and relate it to different cultural perspectives;
  • analyse and investigate front functions and management processes from a service and personnel perspective within a company working with hospitality;
  • design management strategies consistent with the goals of a company in the hospitality industry and describe how to apply them in daily leadership;
  • critically examine how a company in the tourism industry manages hospitality in general and its ability to profitably deal with the consequences of guests' demands regarding service, experiences, security and the environment.

Course content, modules and examinations

The course introduces the hospitality industry and its companies' daily operations. Different definitions and meanings of hospitality in customer meetings are analysed. The course also examines how the tourist companies' front and management personnel can manage their operative work using different management strategies. An investigation is conducted into how hospitality, service and customer interaction can be planned and managed in a tourist company's service processes. Furthermore, an investigation is made of how effective staff management can be conducted in these companies using a constructive company culture. Finally, it examines how different aspects can influence the service process in a service company, such as quality and revenue management.

At most one (1) missing seminar occasion can, in consultation with the course coordinator, be compensated for via an individual written assignment.

The grading criteria are distributed prior to the start of a course or module.

If a student has a certificate from Södertörn University for compensatory support, the examiner has the right to decide on an adapted examination or alternative form of examination in accordance with Södertörn University's regulations.

Restrictions on accreditation

The course may not be accredited as part of a degree if the contents are partly or wholly the same as a course previously taken in Sweden or elsewhere.
