Bachelor's degree including 90 credits in Tourism Studies as the main field of study, and English B or equivalent

After completing the course the student can:

Knowledge and understanding

  • using a critical approach, demonstrate in-depth knowledge of tourism and its role in society
  • autonomously explain the development of global tourism and analyses of tourism trends
  • explain the driving forces behind a city destination's tourism
  • explain how a city destination can be managed taking into account societal contexts and perspectives on sustainable development
  • analyse and discuss how a hospitality system can be managed by a tourism company using a business management perspective
  • autonomously describe how information technology can streamline a tourism company's business processes and create added value for the visitor
  • autonomously relate complex tourism issues to relevant and contemporary tourism research

Course content, modules and examinations

The course has a multidisciplinary and international approach, using city tourism as its starting point. Initially, insights are given into current research on tourism’s long-term international significance. Additionally there is critical assessment of how a hospitality system can be managed by a tourism companies’ managers using a sustainable perspective. After this, understanding is created regarding how information technology can be used in a company’s business processes and how new tourism products and models for organization networks can be developed with the help of new technology. Finally, on the basis of a critical analysis, the driving forces and development strategies of a European city destination are dealt with.

Future Trends in Global Tourism, 7.5 credits

This module provides a basis for the student’s understanding of future conditions for global tourism in a co-creative society. Central societal tourism aspects are identified and analysed; e.g. global and local tourism, the experience economy, new visitor attractions, sustainable social development and the driving forces of tourism, developed destinations, and the role of the media. There is critical reflection on the significance of tourism for building bridges between individuals, groups and countries. Furthermore, the responsibility of various tourism stakeholders for long-term sustainable social development is critically assessed. Finally, potential tourism trends are critically studied using the scenario technique.

Sustainable Hospitality Management: a Manager's Perspective, 7.5 credits

This module critically examines the manager's role in a tourist company using the perspective of sustainability. The first part is focused on leadership and human resource management, the second on business and service product development, the third on service processes and hospitality management and the fourth on sustainability strategies such as the company’s environmental impact and social responsibility.

Information, Communication & Technology in Tourism Business, 7.5 credits

(Information, kommunikation & teknik i turismaffärsverksamhet, 7,5 högskolepoäng)

In this module, the use of information and communication technology (ICT) in tourism companies’ business processes is examines and assessed. Different types of tourism applications, such as the Internet, booking systems, e-business, social media and GIS, are critically analysed as regards functionality, compatibility with other ICT units and economy. Additionally, there is an examination of how added value can be created by the service providers through new IT-based tourist products, such as integrating social media with travel agency sales via the Internet. Finally, the module looks at how different tourist organisations can be integrated using ICT.

City Tourism: a European Perspective, 7.5 credits

(Storstadsturism - ett europeiskt perspektiv, 7,5 högskolepoäng)

This module covers the concept of European city tourism. There is a critical comparative analysis of the prerequisites for city tourism in different European cities. Additionally, in-depth understanding is created for how complex city-related tourist products can be developed for foreign and local customer groups. Finally, there is an analysis of how city tourist destinations can be organised using an integrated tourist, resident and working life perspective.

Course design

The course comprises lectures, seminars, project work and group work. All teaching is in English. However, students may choose to complete written assignments in English or Swedish.

Examination format

The examination formats are written examination, take-home examination, group written assignments, project work and active participation in the seminars.

The grading criteria are distributed prior to the start of a course or module.

If a student has a certificate from Södertörn University for compensatory support, the examiner has the right to decide on an adapted examination or alternative form of examination in accordance with Södertörn University's regulations.

Restrictions on accreditation

The course may not be accredited as part of a degree if the contents are partly or wholly the same as a course previously taken in Sweden or elsewhere.

Other stipulations

Following the Vice-Chancellors decision on internationalization and grade scale at Södertörn University College (dnr: 1148-1.1.2-2018), this syllabus replaces the syllabus with course code 1031TR, with the difference that the grade system has been updated. The syllabus is determined through special order (dnr: 1776-2.1.1-2018).
