Validation

This course syllabus was validated by the Management Board of the School of Historical and Contemporary Studies at Södertörn University on 2019-02-13 according to the stipulations in the Higher Education Ordinance.

Entry requirements

30 credits in Social Science or Humanities and English B (intermediate level), or the equivalent. You also need: English 6 or the equivalent.

Learning outcomes

On completion of the course, the student is able to:

Knowledge and understanding

  • discuss and work with issues found in cultural studies relating to class, gender, ethnicity and other socially constructed identities, using a comparative European perspective
  • discuss and work with questions of ethnic relations and the organisation of diversity, as well as migration and globalisation

Competence and skills

  • analyse and critically review scholarly texts
  • problematise and apply a basic level of scholarly reflexivity in their own and other’s texts
  • Present and discuss theories on cultural and social processes in complex societies

Judgement and approach

  • adopt an evaluative approach to scholarly, visual, and literary representations of race, culture and ethnicity
  • adopt a scholarly approach to societal problems using issues related to diversity, based on gender, ethnicity, class and culture, among other factors

Course content, modules and examinations

The course provides in-depth knowledge of issues that are relevant to the study of cultural complexity, individuals and structures, synchronic and diachronic processes. Central themes are theories relating to cultural variation, ethnicity, national identity, gender and power. The course also problematises various concepts of race, as well as covering issue of how nation-states manage cultural and ethnic differences, issues of the organisation of diversity, and migration och globalisation. The course provides basic knowledge of the theoretical perspectives that have shaped ethnological cultural analysis.

Course design

The course consists of seminars, lectures, and group work. The language of instruction is English.

Examination format

Examination will be in the form of active participation in seminars, oral presentations, and individual written assignments.

Absence from one seminar may be compensated for by a supplementary written assignment.

The grading criteria are distributed prior to the start of a course or module.

If a student has a certificate from Södertörn University for compensatory support, the examiner has the right to decide on an adapted examination or alternative form of examination in accordance with Södertörn University's regulations.

Restrictions on accreditation

The course may not be accredited as part of a degree if the contents are partly or wholly the same as a course previously taken in Sweden or elsewhere.
