Entry requirements

Bachelor's degree including 90 credits in Ethnology or the equivalent as the main field of study and English B or equivalent.

Learning outcomes

On completing the course, the student can:

Knowledge and understanding

  • analyse different types of transnational processes in Europe.
  • explain the complex connections between social and cultural change, and problematise these connections at local and global levels, between individuals, groups and institutions, and between the past and the present.
  • describe ethnological praxis and perspectives on knowledge at a general level.


Skills and abilities

  • independently follow research and developments in the subject,
  • link cultural expressions and practices in a local context with overarching societal processes.


Judgement and approach

  • reflect on the use of culture and identity for both emancipatory and oppressive purposes.

Course content, modules and examinations

This course covers ideas abour and scholarly perspectives on cultural identities and historical processes in Europe, linking ethnological, folkloric and related disciplinary perspectives to broader theoretical developments in the social sciences and the humanities. The course brings a theoretical depth to analytical categories such as culture, ethnicity, identity, ritual and narration. Studies of empirical work and theoretical discussions of the categories mentioned above are included, drawn from international research in ethnology and related disciplines. It provides a general theoretical foundation and understanding of perspectives on knowledge and academic praxis in ethnology, as well as training in academic speech and writing.

Course design

The course consists of lectures and seminars at which primary texts are discussed. Students submit reflection papers on their reading prior to each seminar. For the final examination, which is a take-home exam, students select a particular theoretical work to examine. Participation in seminars is obligatory.

Examination format

The course is examined through oral presentations and written hand-in assignments, participation in seminars and in higher seminars in ethnology.

The grading criteria are distributed prior to the start of a course or module.

If a student has a certificate from Södertörn University for compensatory support, the examiner has the right to decide on an adapted examination or alternative form of examination in accordance with Södertörn University's regulations.

Restrictions on accreditation

The course may not be accredited as part of a degree if the contents are partly or wholly the same as a course previously taken in Sweden or elsewhere.
