Bachelor's degree including 90 credits in Social Sciences as the main field of study, and English 6/English B or equivalent
Learning outcomes
On completing the course, the student is able to:
- broadly describe current research and theory formation on sustainable development from sociological, business economics, economics and psychological perspectives
- broadly describe international agreements on sustainable development such as the UN Sustainability Goals (SDG, Agenda 2030)
- broadly describe current research on models for sustainable social development in which social, economic and ecological sustainability goals are brought together
- critically discuss and analyse sustainability using different social, economic and ecological perspectives at local, national and global levels
- identify and critically analyse the responsibilities and capacity of different actors (individuals, organisations, social workers) vis-à-vis sustainable social development
- critically reflect upon the use of methods common to the social sciences in the analysis of societal development vis-à-vis sustainability and resilience
- critically reflect upon conflicts of interest and ethical dilemmas in the field of sustainable development
Course content, modules and examinations
The aim of the course is to introduce a social science perspective and analysis of dynamic interaction between individuals, organisations, society and ecological systems, focusing on how institutional structures affect conditions for social, economic and ecological sustainability. The course provides a broad introduction to sustainability, with practical exercises, the study of policy fields and contemporary research. The Master's student acquires basic and in-depth knowledge of the study and assessment of sustainability using a wide range of theoretical tools from the social sciences. During the course, the student deepens her or his understanding of societal challenges in terms of economic and social sustainability.

Course design
The teaching consists of lectures, seminars and group exercises, with an emphasis on independent literature studies and student activities.Examination format
- Individual written assignments
- Participation in minor field studies and poster presentation
- Seminar participation
Occasional missed seminars may, after consultation with the examiner, be compensated for through written assignments.
The grading criteria are distributed prior to the start of a course or module.
If a student has a certificate from Södertörn University for compensatory support, the examiner has the right to decide on an adapted examination or alternative form of examination in accordance with Södertörn University's regulations.
