Entry requirements

Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Sociology, Economics, Political Science or Social Work, and English B or the equivalent.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of this course, the student is able to:

  • describe and compare central perspectives in organisation theory
  • critically interpret and analyse organisational phenomena from a variety of theoretical perspectives
  • assess the applicability and limitations of each theoretical perspective, and suggest refinements and alterations, whenever relevant
  • apply theoretical perspectives in the analysis of concrete empirical examples related to sustainability
  • compare and assess the suitability of different perspectives in organisation theory for analysing different types of empirical phenomena
  • contextualise, analyse and deepen knowledge of the organisation of sustainability and related global challenges using organisation theory. 

Course content, modules and examinations

The course examines a selection of central perspectives in organisation theory, and their application in theory generation and the analysis of organisational phenomena. The primary aim of the course is to deepen the student's understanding of basic perspectives in organisation theory in relation to sustainability and their application in the theoretical analysis of empirical examples in the context of sustainability, using independent study, student cooperation, discussions and presentations.

Course design

Teaching is in the form of seminars.

Examination format

Oral presentations, active seminar participation, written individual assignments and a written take-home exam. Absence from no more then two (2) seminars may be compensated for through written hend-in assignments as instructed by the course coordinator,

The grading criteria are distributed prior to the start of a course or module.

If a student has a certificate from Södertörn University for compensatory support, the examiner has the right to decide on an adapted examination or alternative form of examination in accordance with Södertörn University's regulations.

Restrictions on accreditation

The course may not be accredited as part of a degree if the contents are partly or wholly the same as a course previously taken in Sweden or elsewhere.
