This course syllabus was validated by the Management Board of the School of Social Sciences at Södertörn University on 2020-02-13 according to the stipulations in the Higher Education Ordinance.

Entry requirements

Bachelor's degree including 90 credits in Social Sciences as the main field of study, and English B or equivalent.

Learning outcomes

On completing the course, the student can:

  • account for and explain political organisation conceptually, theoretically, and as a perspective
  • critically reflect on and apply theories and arguments concerning political organisation

Course content, modules and examinations

Drawing on the key theme of political organisation, the course theoretically explores causes behind the emergence and maintenance of political organisations. Empirically, the course investigates instances of political organisation, as seen in governments, political parties, civil associations, organised interests, and social movements. Particular attention is accorded to the role of political organisations in democratic governance, capturing the main components of analysis of political organisation.

Course design

The course consists of lectures and seminars.

Examination format

Course examination is conducted through seminar participation and written submissions.

Absence from a maximum of two seminars may be compensated for through written assignments, according to instructions.

The grading criteria are distributed prior to the start of a course or module.

If a student has a certificate from Södertörn University for compensatory support, the examiner has the right to decide on an adapted examination or alternative form of examination in accordance with Södertörn University's regulations.

Restrictions on accreditation

The course may not be accredited as part of a degree if the contents are partly or wholly the same as a course previously taken in Sweden or elsewhere.
