Learning outcomes
After the course the student is able to:
- explain advanced macroeconomic theory
- relate advanced economic theory to social problems at the macro level.
- apply macroeconomic theory to different types of economic problems
- participate in scholarly discussions and contribute qualified opinions on macroeconomic issues
- critically and analytically assess theory‑based claims
- understand how theoretical perspectives and choices of methods influence scientific studies
Course content, modules and examinations
The course provides further knowledge of modern macroeconomic theories that form the basis of international research in the field of macroeconomics. Based on micro fundamentals and political economics, the course deals with the following areas with an emphasis on stability problems: consumption and investment, money and access to credit, and growth. The financial crisis is examined from a range of theoretical perspectives and applications.

Assessment is conducted through a written examination and assignments.The grading criteria are distributed prior to the start of a course or module.
If a student has a certificate from Södertörn University for compensatory support, the examiner has the right to decide on an adapted examination or alternative form of examination in accordance with Södertörn University's regulations.
Restrictions on accreditation
The course may not be accredited as part of a degree if the contents are partly or wholly the same as a course previously taken in Sweden or elsewhere.
Other stipulations
Syllabus revised on 30 August 2023 to correct the title of a required upper-secondary school course, from English B to English 6, in the entry requirements. Revision was conducted by university administration under the decision on the correction of entry requirements regarding language skills acquired in upper-secondary school (reg. no. 2906-2.1.1-2023).
