30 credits in Economics A and English B or equivalent

Learning outcomes

On completion of the course, the student is able to:

  • describe how modern growth models can be used to understand a poor country’s opportunities for economic development
  • explain the impact of international trade and trade policy on a poor country’s performance
  • describe the impact of poverty, inequality, malnutrition and migration on a poor country’s opportunities
  • use economic theory to analyse the obstacles and opportunities facing a poor country
  • reflect on the importance of economic theory in societal development and the responsibility associated with the use of economic tools
  • make independent decisions in the field of development theory
  • demonstrate good insight into the importance of ethical aspects in economic research.

Course content, modules and examinations

The course integrates and deepens knowledge of various areas in economics, such as trade theory, growth models and basic microeconomics, and applies these from the perspective of a developing country. The course begins with a review of the relationship between growth and development. After this, it examines the relationship between inequality and development and the significance of malnutrition from a development perspective. The course will also study the interaction between urban and rural areas and the role of agriculture in poor nations. The course concludes with a review of the importance of trade from a development perspective and of the effects of trade policy.
