Entry requirements
The equivalent of English 6 and 60 credits in Social Sciences or Humanities.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course, the student is able to:
- orally and in writing describe basic theoretical perspectives and research traditions in the field of media and communication studies
- evaluate different models of analysis for the study of media production, media texts and media audiences
- discuss and reflect upon the media's significance in social and cultural life
- discuss and reflect on the relationship between media, society and culture, including the political, economic and cultural framework surrounding the media.
Course content, modules and examinations
The course offers theoretical and analytical perspectives for studying the role of media in society, media texts, media audiences, and media development.

The course consists of lectures and seminars.
Examination format
Obligatory and active participation in the seminars.
Written take‑home exam.
The grading criteria are distributed prior to the start of a course or module.
If a student has a certificate from Södertörn University for compensatory support, the examiner has the right to decide on an adapted examination or alternative form of examination in accordance with Södertörn University's regulations.
Restrictions on accreditation
The course may not be accredited as part of a degree if the contents are partly or wholly the same as a course previously taken in Sweden or elsewhere.

Following the Vice-Chancellor’s Decision on internationalisation and grading scales at Södertörn University (reg.no. 1148-1.1.2-2018), this syllabus replaces that with course code 1114MV and has a revised grading system. This syllabus is validated under special order (reg.no. 1774-2.1.1-2018).
