Entry requirements
Bachelor's degree including 90 credits in Media and Communication Studies as the main field of study or equivalent, and English B or equivalent.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course, the student is able to:
- demonstrate advanced knowledge of celebrity cultures as current and historical phenomena, as well as in relation to media developments
- account for a range of media and communication theories around celebrity, and reflect on how these can be understood from different perspectives
- independently and critically discuss central theoretical and methodological questions in relation to research in the field
- demonstrate heightened ability for nuanced and critical thinking, contextualization and historicization in relation to social and cultural processes around celebrity cultures
- present and discuss scholarly questions concerning celebrity cultures, in an independent and critical way
Course content, modules and examinations
The course examines a body of media and communication theory around celebrity cultures. As part of the course, students will contextualize and historicize different scholarly perspectives within this field of research. The course focuses on supporting the students’ ability to independently and critically take part of advanced scholarly knowledge within the field, to present this in seminars, and to develop own analyses.

Course design
The course is largely structured by self-studies and seminars. The literature is chosen in collaboration with the course leader.Examination format
The course is examined through:
- written essay
- oral presentation
- active seminar participation
The grading criteria are distributed prior to the start of a course or module.
If a student has a certificate from Södertörn University for compensatory support, the examiner has the right to decide on an adapted examination or alternative form of examination in accordance with Södertörn University's regulations.
Restrictions on accreditation
The course may not be accredited as part of a degree if the contents are partly or wholly the same as a course previously taken in Sweden or elsewhere.
